What is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation maps an IP address to a real-world geographic location. It uses databases that associate IP ranges with countries, cities, and coordinates. This information is maintained by regional internet registries and commercial data providers.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is typically accurate to the country level (95%+) and often accurate to the city level. However, accuracy can drop for mobile networks, satellite connections, and users behind VPNs or proxies, which may show the location of the VPN server rather than the user.
What does 'proxy detected' mean?
When our tool flags an IP as a proxy, it means the address appears to be routing traffic through an intermediary server. This includes VPN services, corporate proxies, Tor exit nodes, and anonymizing services. The reported location may reflect the proxy server, not the actual user.
What is an ASN?
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) is a unique identifier assigned to a network operator — such as an ISP, cloud provider, or large enterprise — that controls a block of IP addresses. ASNs are used in internet routing to exchange traffic between networks via BGP (Border Gateway Protocol).
