A nameserver is a server that answers DNS queries for a domain (which IP or records it has).

In plain English
The server that answers “where does this domain live?” for the internet. WHOIS and DNS both show which nameservers a domain uses.
Nameservers are the servers that hold and serve DNS records for a domain. When you set a domain’s nameservers at your registrar, you’re saying “ask these servers for this domain’s DNS.” They return A, MX, TXT, and other records.
Our WHOIS lookup shows which nameservers are configured for a domain; our DNS lookup queries them to show you the actual records.
